assignable cause of variation
- Opsan evident reason for deviation from the norm. An assignable cause exists when variation within a process can be attributed to a particular cause that is a fundamental part of the process. Once identified, the assignable cause of the errors must be investigated and the process adjusted before other possible causes of variation are examined. Using the technique of statistical process control, control charts can be used to distinguish causes that are assignable from those that are random.
